·         Provided national leadership (P.I. AICRP on sugarcane) in the sugarcane improvement programme with special reference to sugarcane pathology (1996-2006) and sugarcane seed production (1990-1993).

·         Detailed studies on pathogenic variability, epidemiology & management of red rot of sugar cane and other major diseases, Sugar cane, wheat, rice and oilseed crops.

·         Involved in the development & release of sugarcane varieties COH 56, COH 92, COH 99, COH 110 and COH 119 in Haryana.

Joined ICAR during 1971 just after Ph D and shifted to PAU in 1975 as Plant Pathologists. Served as many coveted position and retired as Adl. Director of Extension Education.
Published more then 100 research papers, 3 reviews and 3 books
Many recommendations as new spray schedule of new molecules and field sanitation.
Established lab of legume pathology at CNRA, Senegal, and West Africa.
IIHR, Bangalore and lab for obligate parasite at PAU.

Honorary Fellow: Dr S S Chahal

 Dr Sarabjit Singh Chahal is Director of Research, Dean Faculty of Agriculture, Senator, Chairman Postgraduate Education and Research Board, Member Finance Committee, Academic Council and Research Degree Board of Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. 
 

Graduated and Doctorate from Punjab University, Chandigarh, he joined as Assistant Plant Pathologist at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana in 1975 and became Professor in 1990. Dr Chahal rose to the position of Dean, Postgraduate Studies besides serving on a number of key positions in the University. 
 

Prof. Chahal has distinguished himself for carrying out basic and applied research in the field of disease resistance , epidemiology, histopathology, risk analysis, disease cycle and management of several serious diseases of cereals and sunflower. He has contributed in development of three downy mildew resistant varieties, ergot resistant lines of pearl millet and established the mode of action of alkyl phosphate fungicides against phycomycetous plant pathogens. Principal investigator of five externally funded research projects he has been leader of “ International Working Group of Karnal Bunt of Wheat” (ISTA). He has published 130 research papers in Indian and foreign journals, 15 books/manuals, 18 book chapters and 20 popular articles besides editing 5 volumes of Plant Disease Research. 
 

A two time recipient of Prof. M J Narasimhan Academic Award and Pesticides India Award, he was visiting scientist twice to the International Crop Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and twice to Danish Government Institute of  Seed Pathology (DGISP), Copenhagen, Denmark. He has served on editorial board of several journals. Member of ten and fellow of four professional societies, he is also Honorary Fellow of Punjab Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Chahal has been President of Indian Society of Mycology and Plant Pathology, Chairman Steering Committee of the Asian Congress of Mycology and Plant Pathology and Global Conference-II. He is the serving President of Indian Phytopathological Society and has attended 15 International and more than 80 National Conferences. 
 

Recipient of prestigious PAU Meritorious Teacher Award and B B Mundkur Memorial Lecture Award Prof. Chahal is mentor to 14 postgraduate students. 
 

Founder Editor-in-Chief (for five years) of Plant Disease Research, he is the founder member, founder Secretary (for three terms) and has been President of the Indian Society of Plant Pathologists.
